Wajid assures Amnesty International of efforts for release of missing persons

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to UK, Mr. Wajid Shamsul Hasan has assured Amnesty International for making exhaustive efforts to resolve the issue of Missing Persons in Pakistan, who are allegedly under detention without any charges established against them.

Mr. Wajid Shamsul Hasan gave this assurance in a meeting with a three member delegation of Asia Pacific Programme of Amnesty International comprising London-based campaigners.  Ms. Maya Pastakia, and Mr. Sohail Akbar Warraich, accompanied by Mrs. Amna Janjua wife of Missing Person Mr. Masood Janjua.

The delegation is currently on a visit to European countries including UKGermany and Switzerland as part of their efforts to raise the issue of missing persons in Pakistan during the last four years. The relatives of these Missing Persons claim that they were being detained in secret detention centres without any proven charges against them.

Mr. Hasan said that he was deeply concerned about the detention of people without any proven charges against them and added that he would make efforts at the highest possible level to address the issue and thus providing justice to these people.

Amna Masood apprised the High Commissioner of the sufferings being faced by the families of Missing Persons and requested that if there were any charges against these detainees fair trails should be carried out in the court of law or else their release should be ensured without further delay.
