Benazir’s life was committed for disadvantaged people :

Wajid lauds conferment of UN Peace Award to Benazir Bhutto

 

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to UK Mr. Wajid Shamsul Hasan has said that the conferment of UN Peace Award for Human Rights to  Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto Shaheed is an evidence of the tall stature of Mohtarama in the international politics as in the past this award has been conferred upon such towering personalities as Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King.

 

In an interview with Pakistan Television Mr. Hasan said that the award was befitting to the personality of Shaheed Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto which symbolized the quest for restoration of rights of people’s of Pakistan crushed by military dictators.

 

He said that her struggle for Human Rights of People of Pakistan could be traced to the era of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto the legacy she continued after his martyrdom by struggling against the dictatorial regime.

 

After coming into Power in 1993 she didn’t part away from the notion of human rights and for the first time in the history of Pakistan established a mechanism at government level for monitoring and improving human rights situation in Pakistan. She established first, a Human Rights Cell in the Ministry of Law and Justice headed by her Adviser on Human Rights  Kamran Haider Rizvi and then this Cell was granted the status of Ministry headed by Syed Iqbal Haider.

 

Mr. Hasan further added that due to her devotion towards down trodden and suppressed classes she introduced several revolutionary steps for women and minorities .Women police stations were set up and women were given more space in judiciary. Besides this checks were put on unjust use of blasphemy law against Christians.

 

The High Commissioner said that this Award has brought Pride and Prestige to entire Pakistani nation.
