Human rights protection among priority areas: Wajid

 

London: Pakistan High Commissioner to UK Wajid Shamsul Hasan has said protection of human rights remains among priority areas in Pakistan as Pakistan People’s Party attaches great significance to the human rights issues and pays attention to address human rights related problems and it is one of the achievements of present Government on the front of human rights protection that at present there are no political prisoners in Pakistan. He was talking to President Pakistan Human Rights Forum UK Mr. Shahid Dastgir Khan in a meeting held here, today.

 

Matters pertaining to safety and security of minorities as well as Pakistan ’s efforts for release of Dr. Afia Siddiqui came under discussion during the meeting. Mr. Shahid Dastgir Khan was accompanied by two other members of the Forum, Mr. Abdul Aziz and Sardar Abbas Ali Khan.

 

The Human Rights Forum highlighted the need for establishing truth commission for the accountability of institutions and individuals in Pakistan .

 

Discussing the efforts to help Dr. Afia Siddiqui the High Commissioner informed the delegation that the Government of Pakistan was undertaking all the possible steps in this direction and Pakistan ’s Ambassador in Washington was constantly in touch with authorities in USA to ensure maximum assistance to Dr. Siddiqui.

 

The High Commissioner apprised the delegation of measures taken by the present government for the uplift of minorities and their security. Mr. Hasan further informed the delegation that reservation of five minority seats in the senate, employment quote and designation of 11th August as minority day were some of the steps to signify the uplift of minorities.
