Appeal from the High Commissioner

 

As you are aware, the Government of Pakistan has launched a massive operation against militants and terrorists in Malakand Division including Swat, Dir, Buner, Bajour, Waziristan and other Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan.

 

Before the launch of law enforcement operation, the Government of Pakistan exhausted all options to resolve the issue peacefully through dialogue. While the government fulfilled its part of the deal, the extremists continued to challenge the writ of the state and terrorised the people of these areas.

 

This operation has caused large scale dislocation of approximately 1.5 million peace loving citizens of Swat and Malakand Divisions, who have left their homes and taken shelter in Swabi and Mardan districts of NWFP province.

 

In view of the enormity of the situation as a result of mass exodus of people in these areas, the Government has allocated Rs.1500 million for relief operations. The Government would also provide jobs to the family members of those who have lost lives in the conflict. Given the scale of the problem, the Pakistani community in the United Kingdom can play a major role in ameliorating the plight of our countrymen.

 

The Prime Minister of Pakistan has established “Special Fund for Victims of Terrorism” for the affectees.  The High Commission for Pakistan has opened the following bank account in the United National Bank, UK to collect donations for the Prime Minister’s Fund as follows:

The donations could be deposited by cheque in any branch of the United National Bank in UK (click here to launch the branch locator). All donations made by the community organizations and individuals will be posted on the High Commission’s Website.

 

Apart from financial donations by cheque in the above account, the following items are required in the context of the relief efforts:

 

                                i.      Containerized latrines/wash rooms.

                               ii.      Large-size tents of 8 x 6 and 8 x 8 Meters.

                             iii.      Fire-fighting equipment.

                            iv.      Water bowzers and

                              v.      Generators 28 kVA and above.

 

I am confident that our brothers and sisters would make generous donations to this noble cause.
